Compare caffeine content in coffee, tea, energy drinks, and sodas side by side. See per-serving, per-ounce, and daily limit breakdowns.
Coffee generally contains significantly more caffeine than tea. An 8oz cup of drip coffee has about 95mg of caffeine, while the same amount of green tea has only 28mg and black tea around 47mg. However, matcha and yerba mate can come closer to coffee's caffeine levels. The exact amount depends on brewing method, steep time, and serving size.
Among common energy drinks, Bang leads with 300mg of caffeine per 16oz can. Celsius has 200mg per 12oz, 5-Hour Energy packs 200mg into just 2oz, and both Monster and Rockstar contain 160mg per 16oz can. Red Bull is actually on the lower end with 80mg per 8.4oz can. Always check labels, as formulations can change.
Espresso is more concentrated per ounce (about 63mg per 1oz shot), making it the strongest coffee by volume. However, a single espresso shot (63mg) actually contains less total caffeine than a standard 8oz drip coffee (95mg) because the serving size is so much smaller. If you're comparing caffeine impact, the total milligrams in your drink matters more than concentration.
Cold brew typically contains more caffeine than regular drip coffee. A 16oz cold brew has about 205mg of caffeine compared to 190mg in a 16oz drip coffee. Nitro cold brew is even higher at approximately 215mg per 12oz. The long steeping time (12-24 hours) extracts more caffeine from the grounds, and cold brew is often served in larger portions.
5-Hour Energy leads with 100mg per ounce, followed by espresso at 63mg/oz. Most other drinks have much lower concentrations: cold brew runs about 13-17mg/oz, drip coffee about 12mg/oz, energy drinks around 10-19mg/oz, tea at 3.5-9mg/oz, and sodas at 2.8-4.5mg/oz.
